What is Sotogrande?
Sotogrande is a private estate in the municipality of San Roque, in the province of Cádiz, at the western end of the Costa del Sol. It was founded in 1962 by the Filipino-American businessman Joseph McMicking, and it did not grow as a village that gradually filled up but as a project planned from the outset around golf, polo and the sea. Its first course, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, by Robert Trent Jones, opened in 1964, and everything else followed.
Sotogrande is a world apart within the coast. It is further from Málaga airport than Marbella, has fewer shops and less noise, and precisely because of that it attracts a family buyer who stays for long periods, not for weekends.
Areas of Sotogrande: Alto, Costa, La Reserva and the marina
The main road divides Sotogrande into two halves:
- Sotogrande Costa: between the road and the sea, on both sides of the Guadiaro river mouth. Here are the Real Club de Golf, the beach, the beach club and the original villas of Kings & Queens, the streets named after kings and queens.
- Sotogrande Alto: above the road, on rolling hills and woodland. Here are the international school, the stables, Valderrama, Almenara and La Reserva.
- La Reserva de Sotogrande: the highest and most recent part, with its own course from 2003, a beach club, tennis and padel.
- Puerto de Sotogrande: the marina, opened in 1987, which organises the social life of the estate in summer.

Golf in Sotogrande
Sotogrande gathers four courses within the estate:
- Real Club de Golf Sotogrande (1964), designed by Robert Trent Jones, in Sotogrande Costa.
- Valderrama, in Sotogrande Alto, probably the best-known course in Spain.
- La Reserva Club (2003), designed by Cabell Robinson, on the upper side.
- The Alto Club, also on the upper side.
A few minutes away, already in Casares, lies Finca Cortesín, host of the 2023 Solheim Cup. It is a concentration of top-level golf with no equivalent along the rest of the coast.

Marina and polo in Sotogrande
Sotogrande marina, opened in 1987, is the largest in Andalusia, with 1,382 berths, and concentrates the social life of the estate in summer with its restaurants and its market. Polo is the other signature: the summer season concentrates tournaments and fills the estate through August. Outside those months, Sotogrande is a notably quiet place.

School, security and access
Sotogrande has an international school inside the estate itself, in Sotogrande Alto, and permanent security. These are the two factors that explain why many families settle here all year. Gibraltar airport is about half an hour away and Málaga around an hour and a half by motorway. That distance is part of its character.
What kind of property do people buy in Sotogrande?
Large-plot villas in Sotogrande Alto and La Reserva, golf-side and beachside villas in Kings & Queens and the rest of Sotogrande Costa, apartments by the marina and new build in the recent developments on the upper side. The buyer tends to be a family staying for long periods, and many come for the school and the golf before the beach.
