What is Mijas?
Mijas is a municipality in the province of Málaga between Marbella and Fuengirola, with two very different centres joined by a mountain road. Mijas Pueblo is the historic village, a white village in the hills with views over the whole bay, famous for its donkey taxis, a tradition born in the nineteen-sixties when tourists asked the labourers riding home on donkeys for a photograph. Mijas Costa is the coastal strip, from Calahonda to La Cala de Mijas, where the developments and almost all the international market are concentrated.
Its position, halfway between Marbella and Málaga, is its strongest argument: the airport is less than half an hour away by motorway from almost anywhere in the municipality.
Areas of Mijas
- Mijas Pueblo: the white village, with the Mirador de la Muralla and the gardens over the old fortress.
- La Cala de Mijas: the coastal town, with a village structure, square and promenade.
- La Cala Golf: the development around La Cala Resort, inland.
- Riviera del Sol: developments on both sides of the motorway, with Miraflores Golf.
- Calahonda: one of the largest developments on the coast, on the border with Marbella.

Beaches in Mijas
The municipal coastline runs about 12 kilometres, with La Cala de Mijas at its centre. Its beaches hold three Blue Flags and nine Q tourism quality flags. The Senda Litoral, the pedestrian and cycling walkway, covers six kilometres between Playa de la Luna and the town of La Cala, and is one of the reasons the area works so well for anyone after an outdoor life all year round.
Golf in Mijas
La Cala Resort, inland in the municipality, gathers three 18-hole courses designed by Cabell B. Robinson, named Campo América, Campo Asia and Campo Europa, and is recognised by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation as the largest golf complex in the country. Along the coastal strip, Miraflores Golf and Calanova Golf complete the offer. It is a municipality where you can play all week without repeating a course.

What kind of property do people buy in Mijas?
Mostly apartments and townhouses in developments with gardens and pools, plus villas in the golf areas and on the higher ground. Prices per square metre are among the most contained on the western coast and rental demand is solid, which makes the municipality a classic second-home and investment market. Those after a village and views buy in Mijas Pueblo; those after beach and train, in La Cala or in neighbouring Fuengirola.
